The first time I watched it happen in real time, it was a 9-month-old Border Collie mix named Scout, 38 pounds, drooling by the second highway exit and vomiting before we hit the on-ramp for the third. Confusing the two is where owners get stuck rotating through remedies that were never going to solve the problem they’re facing.

Ginger is the one of these two ingredients with dog-specific antiemetic data, not just extrapolated human research. A study on the antiemetic efficacy of ginger extracts against cisplatin-induced vomiting in dogs, published in ScienceDirect, found that acetone and 50% ethanolic extracts of ginger at doses of 25, 50, 100, and 200 mg/kg provided significant protection against emesis — while the aqueous extract at the same doses did not. That last detail matters clinically: not every ginger preparation behaves the same way, and a watery tea or a trace amount in a treat is not the same exposure as a standardized extract. If you’re evaluating a ginger product for a dog prone to car sickness, the extraction method and concentration on the label are worth reading before you trust the marketing claim on the front of the bag.

Cisplatin-induced emesis is a chemically driven model, not a motion-sickness model, so it doesn’t map perfectly onto vestibular nausea. Chamomile’s case is different, and I want to be direct about that rather than soften it. The proposed mechanism is plausible: chamomile contains apigenin, a compound thought to bind GABA-A receptors in a way that could produce a mild anxiolytic effect, similar to how benzodiazepines work at a different binding site on the same receptor complex. That’s a real, well-characterized pharmacological pathway in general terms. What’s thin is the direct canine trial data — chamomile’s anxiolytic evidence in dogs leans heavily on human and rodent research, extrapolated experience, and a long history of traditional use, rather than a controlled trial in dogs riding in cars.

That doesn’t make chamomile useless. It makes it a different kind of tool: one aimed at the anxious-passenger problem, not the vomiting-reflex problem, and one where “it calmed my dog” and “it has a demonstrated antiemetic effect” are not the same claim. If your dog’s car sickness is anxiety-driven — pacing, panting, drooling before the car even starts moving — chamomile’s calming mechanism is at least aimed at the right target, even if the canine-specific dosing and efficacy data lag behind ginger’s.

How I actually work through this with an owner

I had a client last spring with a 6-year-old Labrador, 71 pounds, who’d been fine in the car for years and then started vomiting on trips longer than 20 minutes — no obvious trigger, no other GI signs, otherwise normal on exam and bloodwork. For the vestibular, vomiting-forward presentation, the strongest evidence-backed options are the ones with actual canine antiemetic data — which currently favors ginger extract among the botanicals, and favors licensed veterinary medications overall. According to a GoodRx overview of prevention options, Cerenia is the only medication specifically licensed in the US for motion sickness in dogs and is typically given about two hours before travel; veterinarians may also prescribe maropitant or meclizine off-label depending on the case. For the anxiety-forward presentation, chamomile’s calming mechanism is reasonable as a mild adjunct, but a dog with real travel anxiety usually needs more than a botanical — counterconditioning, desensitization, or in some cases a vet-prescribed anxiolytic like trazodone. None of that is a swap for a proper workup if vomiting is frequent, sudden in onset, or paired with other signs; that’s a conversation for your veterinarian, not a supplement aisle decision.
